2015 4Runner - Head Unit stays on once Vehicle is turned off

Post by zephyr » Sun Nov 26, 2017 1:54 am

2015 4Runner SR5 Premium
Alpine ILX-107
Maestro RR
TO2 Harness

Head unit stays on once vehicle is turned off. Everything on the head unit works normally, including all vehicle data from OBD2, backup camera, and radio reception via powered antenna.

With the OBD2 disconnected, the unit powers on and off normally with the key/ignition, but TPMS not available.

Is the head unit being powered from the OBD2 port?

Please advise.

No, it is not. The only thing we get from the OBD2 is the TPMS. I will consult with our engineers and see what we need to try to get this working for you.

After more troubleshooting, I completely disconnected the MRR to reflash it and discovered the head unit cooling fan continued to run with the vehicle off. Selectively disconnecting harnesses from there, the fan turned off when the powered antenna harness was disconnected.

I know the powered antenna only needs 12v when the car is on, so I spliced the blue wire from the antenna harness to the red ACC lead. All appears to work as expected now

Can you shed some light on this behavior, and whether this is the proper solution?

Cutting that blue wire is the answer- I believe there are multiple blue wires on the green plug; one of them is a power antenna wire, and one of them is a security wire. In some cases, we have seen the wire backfeed and keep the radio powered. I'm not sure why it does this in some vehicles, but I do know that resolves the issue.

Second issue - the 4Runner has a dealer installed aftermarket remote start. When starting the car via remote start, the connection to the vehicle data is not made, even after inserting the key and starting to drive. Also, when starting the car in this manner the head unit displays a small message at the bottom of the screen saying “Ignition OFF”.

Warming the car up before driving is a requirement here in Alaska. Is there a way to overcome this?

We're looking into it- a follow-up question: Does the radio come during remote start, or does it power up when you get in the vehicle and do takeover with the key?

Head unit powers on normally during remote start. All functions normal except data connection to vehicle.

What brand is your remote start?

Here are a few screenshots of the head unit after starting the 4Runner with the remote start.

As you can see the gauges aren't getting info from the vehicle. Also, the "Ignition if OFF" alert is shown.

Oddly, while the TPMS isn't functional, battery voltage is and the door open warning appears to work.

Lastly, the head unit will not allow access to the settings, as if it thinks the car is driving. Audio is selectable, Display, General, and Application are greyed out, if not clear from the photo.

That's a long a sordid story, but the dealer told me it's an Auto Mate Model AM6.2.

Called Alpine Tech services about a separate issue, and asked if they'd seen issues with remote starters. They suggested that maybe the power to either the head unit or the maestro is being interrupted during the remote cranking cycle which is causing the communication between the head unit and maestro to fail until the car is turned off and started normally again.

Thoughts on this?

Not exactly. We suspect one of the ignition wires might not be powered up by the remote start. Because the accessory is powering up the radio, the radio comes on, and times out after trying to communicate with the data lines that aren't awake. This explains the behavior we're seeing.

During remote start (not after you've done takeover with the key), does the radio show door status correctly? I assume your pictures are from after you remote started, and after you've done takeover with the key?

All pictures are from after I remote started, but before I've done the takeover with the key.

Would it help the troubleshooting if I called your tech service line?

Any further information about how to troubleshoot the issue with the remote start?

We suspect that one of the ignitions isn't powering up on remote start, which is causing this issue. We haven't seen any issues with this vehicle, so it's got to be something like that. In fact, our R&D manager had this same vehicle with a remote start installed and didn't have any issues, so i think something isn't getting powered properly.
