2012 Toyota Camry, TO2 Harness, Backup Cam

Post by Anon101 » Thu Jan 28, 2016 1:08 am

I'm looking over the installation instructions (ADS-RR(SR)-TOY02-DS-IG-EN_20151202.pdf) and on page 15 it says to cut the idatalink backup harness off. Ok that's fine, this thing was cheap enough and easy to work with.

BUT, how am I intended to connect the loose wires to the factory harness?

I'm not terribly comfortable cutting off the factory harness to mate the wires. Is that the intention of the instructions?

You do need to splice into the factory wires, but you can do it without cutting off the plug. See attached for instructions on how to make a military splice.

That makes more sense...

What's the difference on these models that causes it not to be compatible with the TO2 harness?

The plug is different than all the other vehicles covered by this solution.

Thought I would post some unsolicited feedback after completing my installation...

1. The installation instructions reference 5 total connections to the Maestro box (4 from the TO2 harness and the serial data cable to the HU). There are only 3 connections on the TO2 harness. I believe connection C is the false one.

2. The OEM backup cables are very thin and quite difficult to military splice. You might consider including an adapter for models that have the smaller connector.

3. I was disappointed there was no factory antenna adapter included. This is billed as a complete solution, but I had to run to Best Buy mid-install to pickup an adapter.

Otherwise everything went very smoothly and I'm very happy.

Actually I am having one more issue with the backup camera. The power seems to be tied to the brake pedal now while previously I believe the OEM HU was supplying a constant 6v to the camera. Even while in drive or park with my Kenwood displaying the camera input, I only get camera video with the brake pressed.

I don't really want to take the car apart again without a plan so can you please shed some light on how the TO2 is powering the 6v camera?

I didn't get a good look at the wiring of the harness before closing everything up. Is there a 6v wire or is the Maestro RR unit sourcing the camera?

If the maestro is sourcing the 6v, can an option be added to weblink to accommodate different power scenarios?

I'd like to have constant 6v to the camera when the stereo is on since the Kenwoods give the option to switch to the camera input on demand.

Connector C is not actually built onto the harness, it's an error in the guide. There is a new version of the guide being made to correct that.

The blue/yellow wire from the maestro supplies 5v to turn on the camera. In order to troubleshoot and figure out what's going on, it's best if you can give us a call with the car apart, so we can look at your wiring in real-time and figure out what's going on. We're open 8:30-8:30 EST through the end of February.

Thanks, but I'd rather not open the car up unless there's a fix prepared. If I'm going to have to wire up a dc converter from the accessory wire or something I'd like to have the parts in hand and ready to go next time.

Can you tell me what the Maestro is programmed to do?

Is it meant to be supplying that 5v constantly or under some condition where your software could be the culprit?

If it's constant, then yeah I could see a wiring issue where a phone call with the car open would be appropriate. But, as it stands the reverse signal and everything else in the harness seems to be wired fine. The only issue in the entire system is that the camera is not powered unless the brake is pressed. So, I'm not inclined to believe a phone call with the car open will accomplish anything except potentially being the time one of the retention clips breaks from being pulled in and out.

I have the engineer looking at his firmware to see if something is up with the firmware.

We only supply 5v to the camera when the vehicle is in reverse, or when you're in the reverse camera screen.

The harness and firmware compatible with that vehicle is T02.
