Pioneer 4201NEX install in 2013 4runner

Post by 12voltdata79 » Thu Nov 02, 2017 12:22 am

I've need help trying to diagnose my Pioneer 4201NEX install issues in a 2013 4runner base audio option/no factory backup cam. I have a JL 4 ch, front to power front components and rear bridged power a sub and a pair of rear speakers powered by HU. Following the Step 1 on the install instructions I've soldered every single wire on TO1 harness to Pioneer's main harness. Except for YELLOW/BLACK-FOOT BRAKE, PINK VEHICLE SPEED as they don't have corresponding Pioneer main harness wires. Plugged aux in RCA CABLES into AUX audio input (anyone know what audio feed does it give the HU?).

Step 2 As I don't have a factory backup camera I spliced/solder Pioneer ND-BC8 red wire to to RED-ACCESORY and Black to BLACK/GROUND and cams RCA into Brown (BC IN) cam input at HU. (have not tested functionality yet)

Step 3 Connected T01 harness to 3 available/matching factory radio harness skipped T01 backup cam harness.

Step 4 connected OBDII Connector. Step 5/6 Data cable into idatalink port on HU and audio cable into aux in 3.5mm jack (does this feed the gauges display?)

Powered HU and I see that steering doesn't work and does not even illuminate at all my buttons anymore. Components doesn't sound right and no sub output. rear speakers powered by HU sounds better. Playing video is blank with a message applying parking brake twice.

Guages do work fine though and maestro's connection check is OK. Also OEM custom options that are only customizable at dealer are now available.

Thought it was an easy fix like this dude's solution but that didn't work. I'll try to troubleshoot/reset maestro tomorrow morning any suggestions on what to double check would be greatly appreciated.

The Aux RCAs are to retain your OEM aux port, if equipped. Perhaps it's in the center console?

Step 4: The data cable does your gauges, steering wheel controls, vehicle info, and much more. The audio cable does OEM audio for you, if we retained an OEM USB, or OEM satellite radio, for example.

We don't have anything to do with the audio, since you wired in your own amps. You didn't hook up any speaker wires or audio RCAs from the radio to the TO1 harness, correct? I just checked your flash, and everything there looks ok. If it sounds weird, it's going to come down to tuning, wiring, or crossover settings in the deck or amp.

The steering wheel backlight has absolutely nothing to do with the radio. It's powered by its own independent circuit. You may check fuses to see if you've got one that's blown.

Does the light on the RR blink when you press a steering wheel button?

From what I read my oem aux port with usb is not retained by T01 harness by itself, so I can connect an RCA to 3.5mm pin have that option available. I'm not using XM as well so I can safely assume I can leave the audio cable unplugged as well to have another AV aux input available for something else.

Amp/sub was working fine before with the stock HU using PAC line output converter so it's just a matter of RCA plug and play into HU so I'm confident to say that there shouldn't be any problem with amp wiring.

I've hooked up ALL speaker wires like it said on the install manual as I didn't want to leave it open in case I want to pull out the system in the future and makes it easier to plug all oem audio back in. I'm using the amp front to power front components and the rear 1 8" sub and a rear speakers from HU. Should I just have rear speaker connected to the TO1 harness and other speakers open?

I'll check on that blinking soon.

Also I have one connector that seemed hard to lock in place when I was trying to plug it in the maestro module which I though was a defective plug as it was just coming off easily but after few tries it locked itself in the port. I'll check that one to make sure it did not came off.

Thanks for your help!

None of the audio goes through the maestro, so if your audio sounds bad, the culprit is the deck and how you wired it.

If you hooked up speaker wires on the TO1, you're likely amplifying an already amped signal, and this can cause damage to your radio AND sound really bad. That's probably your issue. If a channel is amplified (front left channel, for example), you shouldn't also be hooking up speaker wires from the deck. Assuming that you use RCA cables to send low-level signal to the amp, the RCA output should be feeding the amp. If you hook a channel up twice, you're going to have weird audio problems.

I forgot to add I'm not using factory front speaker wires I ran a bigger speaker guage wires for the front components to a passive crossover in my center console so the front factory speaker wires are not plugged to any speakers and yes the front channels are fed with RCA output from HU.

Ok, then my original point remains. The only other factor here is the radio. The audio does NOT run through the maestro at all, so if it sounds weird, it's something to do with the deck or the crossover settings.

Solved the sound/amp issue for some reason my amp was switch to 2 channel input instead of 4 channel and ended up combining front channel into my amp so that solved the crappy sound with no sub out. :?

Still stumped with steering wheel control though.

Here's a video I uploaded of the 4200NEX function test

and the wiring spaghetti.

Maestro module does not blink when I press the buttons on steering wheel. Any other thoughts?

See attached. It looks like you're missing the 28 pin connector behind the radio- this is where the steering wheel control wires are. You need to connect to this behind the radio, then plug the other end into the TO1.

That was it! It looked like it was the harness for oem camera from the install diagram that's why I ignored it. Solved the blank video issue with my video bypass as well by disconnecting the LTGREEEN- EBRAKE connection on T01 harness side as recommended by a local shop. Everything seems to be working now as well as the backup cam. Greatly appreciate this! :D
