Why connect to OBD2 harness?

Post by Alawatsakima » Tue Sep 05, 2017 11:15 am

I have not yet purchased a Maestro RR, but I am doing research for a near-future investment

One thing I am troubled by... I will eventually want to display gauges both on my Kenwood Headunit and on my Android phone... More screen real estate is always better than less

As far as I can tell, once the data goes into the Maestro RR/Headunit, there is no getting it out again... The Maestro has no interface directly to the phone, and the Headunit has no pass through for the OBD data. Am I correct in that conclusion? Maybe there's a web interface I'm missing?

I would LIKE to leave the OBD2 port available for other devices, say maybe an ELM327 based Bluetooth scan dongle... And this brings me to my question... Why is the Maestro occupying that port? Is there something inadaquate about the pins in the radio harness that provide CANbus access to the factory head unit?

Yes, you're correct. Our product is designed to simply show the data on the radio. We get the diagnostic data from the OBD2, so if you disconnect that, your gauges will not work. We are pulling the data from here because the data line behind the radio does not supply the diagnostic information we're looking for.

Sounds fair.

What about OBD2 splitter cables, like https://www.amazon.com/Docooler-16Pin-S ... B000TMCX72 ?

My google-fu is weak this morning... I cant find anyone saying one way or the other...

You can try this, but some vehicles do not like (and are not able) to send to more than one scan-tool at a time.
